The frozen bag of ice vibrated the silent kitchen floor with a metal clank. Ice cubes rapid-ly dispersed throughout the floor. As I viewed the collusion, my dreams were, in a way, shatter-ing like the ice. My dreams were overwhelmed by external forces; it was nearly 100 degrees, and there was a new episode of The Walking Dead. Suddenly, the phone rang. I was brought back to reality, the reality in which I had homework assignments, responsibilities, and chores to do.
“Oh man, I really did it this time,” I moaned, as I slid into my polka dot slippers, rushing to pick up the phone before it went to voicemail. Receiving daily backlash, my mother concerned herself not with what others thought but how she was going to accomplish her dream. “Every day of mourning was one day less of accomplishing my dream,” my mother proudly declared. When my mother was in China, she faced obstacles day after day, yet she propelled through them all by working over 60 hour a week on rice crops.
Like my mother, I want to go beyond social boundaries and do something that’s viewed as atypical. Unlike my mother’s dream, my dream is to become an entrepreneur whose sole purpose is not for money, but rather for people. I want make products that can combat today’s problems, from third world poverty to worldwide pollution. That is my dream, and I know it is def-initely possible… if I was willing to put in the work.
Well, here I was, drenched in sweat, oppressed by summer heat and a new episode of The Walking Dead. Honestly, I believe my mother had to overcome much more adversity than I did. She faced an onslaught of naysayers while I was hindered by sweat and a television show. The single utmost important lesson from my mother’s experience is unequivocal: you have to fight for your dreams.
