This year in English with Mrs. Portmore-Davies, I grew as both a reader and a writer. In the very beginning of the year, I overused commas. In my summer reading essay, I had 3-4 commas per sentence, which is way too much. After a few lessons about clauses and where to put commas, I became much better at this. I also grew as a reader. I learned how to identify and interpret different types of figurative language. This is extremely useful because it allows you to understand important points in writing. Understanding how to use figurative language in writing is also essential. It allows you to express your points in greater detail.

I am pleased with my Immigration Narrative Excerpt. I am pleased with this piece because it was the first writing sample that we made using dialogue. I think that I did a good job of using this important tool correctly. I also used the figurative language tool of suspense. In that essay, I thought that we could put one example of the theme, satire, and symbolism, and elaborate on them. I guess I didn't elaborate enough to get the credit for the other two details. I learned that elaborating is one of the most important things to do in an analytical essay. Elaborating is going to be a skill that I have to work on in my future writing pieces. I also didn't use transitional phrases in this essay. In the conclusion, I stated, "All we have to remember is to take care of Earth". In that sentence, I could have used a transitional word like
