My Personal Nursing Philosophy Growing up in a remote part of Africa that had no healthcare amenities to help in taking care of the sick, I had the burning desire to help those in need and also to make a difference in that community. When I had the opportunity to migrate to the United States, I chose nursing as the career that will help me in accomplishing my goal and to touch as many lives as possible. When caring for a patient, I try to meet their physiological needs first because they are the most important requirements for human survival. If these basic needs are not met, the patient cannot function well and thus making healing a lot more difficult. Practicing love and kindness is fundamental to me because it helps me in sharing them with those I care for. Making the healing environment comfortable at all levels is critical in caring for the patient and for patient healing. Promoting the spirit of human caring can be shown through respect when assisting the patient with activities of daily living. Involving the patient in his or her own care can also promote health collaboratively. Patients are always addressed by their name; never talk about them as a problem because this can delay or interrupt the kind of care that the patient rightfully deserves. I protect, support, and allow the patient to express his or her feelings because it will promote a better state of health for that patient. The patients are always made to understand that when I am with them, it is always about them. The nurse has to understand that every interaction that he or she has with the patient has an impact (Marchuk, 2014). Therefore, giving the patient the required attention can lead to a trusting relationship with the patient. This is very important because this brings about comfort that may lead the patient to open up and divulge information that may be critical to their health. These may be things that the nurse can help with or help the patient in getting the help he or she requires. Nursing has helped in broadening my horizon and understanding in what I can do to make a difference. It has taught me that my practice should not end at my place of employment.
