Personal Philosophy of Teaching
My philosophy of teaching is strongly linked to my philosophy of nursing; I believe the essence of nursing, learning, and mostly everything we in do is based in our knowledge and how much we care about ourselves and others. I strongly believe that as teachers we need to care for our students and their learning experience in order to help them to succeed first as students and then in their professional practice. I believe students indeed have a desire to learn different new concepts and to be active participants in their educational journey. I also believe students are caring persons, special, and unique. I think people learn by making sense and drawing connections between what is already known, understood, or lived and any new information learned. Therefore, prior knowledge and experience are important to the learning process. Knowing in advance what the big ideas are, the main theoretical concepts, and how they relate to each other conceptually helps learners to make sense of information, to remember, and use it more flexibly later on. Involve me and I learn.” I anticipate to use strategies that include involving learners in course development, teaching and evaluation, discussion and or journaling assignments which allow for sharing of ideas, feelings and experiences, and independent study and projects where students do the information gathering and presenting. By sharing experiences and working in groups students can share life situations and learn from each other. By encouraging student participation and sharing of experiences, an environment where the teacher is not the only source of knowledge is created.
