Personal Reflection
Some of my past experiences that have led me to attend college, and help to shape my academic choices were due to the fact that I have an exceptional needs brother, daughter, nephew, and grandson who all require a social worker. I have been involved with Children Protective Services since 1998 as a kinship home. One might ask what is a kinship home? A kinship home is a home where all the children placed in your home are related to you. Therefore, my husband and I were raising our children along with four nieces, four nephews, and one cousin. This meant that each family should have had a caseworker, but due to the fact that there were not enough caseworkers all nine of the children shared just one. So I became an advocate for my brother who is mentally challenged all of his paperwork was done by me. I also take care of his appointments, and still to this day that is my job in our family. Until 2014 when I decided to get a degree at first my choice was to teach special education, but after working for my grandson being a social worker just seems to be a perfect fit for me.
My professional experience begins in 2000 when I started working as a bus operator for the Briarwood School as a driver for special needs students. I quickly realized that I should put more into this field of work, and in 2014 when I began taking classes at Lone Star College I started working for Aldine ISD in the transportation Dept.
