Navigating “The Open Boat” Stephen Crane’s short story, “The Open Boat,” presents a harrowing account of men navigating a dinghy after a shipwreck, challenging the elements of nature for survival. Crane masterfully depicts this dangerous setting by employing nature as an antagonistic character. He incorporates a mixture of points of view that allows readers to relate to the men’s dilemma. Crane portrays skilled seamen who have a bond as well as a duty to each other. He includes touches of symbolism to foreshadow outcomes and define the power of nature.

What is the true difference between a child’s mind and an adult’s? The Ocean at the End of the Lane is one such novel that entertains this thought. I have heard a plethora of great things for being a lifeguard at Foothills Swim and Racquet Club. For example, coworkers are nice, teaching swim lessons are fun because people get to form a relationship with the kids, and have the chance to meet new people. My brother, Andrew Sebald, worked at Foothills last summer and loved everyday he was working there. All the great things that I have heard about came mostly from Andrew. This made me want to have the opportunity to work at Foothills.

This method I have found out has helped me the most it helps me remember certain things better due to my short-term memory loss. Both of my reading and writing method I have discovered for myself throughout my school years has helped me learn better and just in generally better myself academic wise.

Trips to Lake Tahoe are like an ancient, sacred ritual for my family; much like some families that slice into a turkey at Thanksgiving, my tightly-knit family journeys to Tahoe annually. The beauty and majesty of nature draws us like bees to honey. The fresh water and high altitude makes my thoughts clear, and cleanses my soul. The yearly trip signifies the start of my year, and makes me ponder the changes and concurrencies of my life. Packing for the trip is like second nature for me now, and I memorized our path.

Realizations as a Reader and Writer Through my introduction to the textbook, getting a glimpse of what is to come for this class, I have come to some realizations about myself as a reader and writer. In just the first page of text I already have some ideas of how i see myself as a reader and writer. I know throughout this year my reading and writing will change greatly to ultimately become a more critical thinker and reader. Surfing is a sport and way of life with a rich history, a beautifully complex technique, and a price point to match its survival throughout centuries of its staying alive, and its incredible community to uphold its public name. Though the world of today does not know of the original creation of surfing, historians like Peter Westwick and Peter Neushul believe that modern surfing first started when Polynesians came to Hawaii in the 15th century. Polynesian were experts of water who most likely applied their knowledge of the great blue ocean to create a new sport for their youth. Around 300 years after the arrival of the Polynesians, British explorer Captain James Cook arrived to Hawaii.
One time I felt scared of a situation or someone was when I was 8 years old and I was in the lake. I thought I could swim and I went to the deep. I got scared, because I could not touch the ground. And I started drowning and trying to get up. Water started getting in my nose and then, my dad swam towards me, because he was in the water few distance away from me.
