Since I was eight years old I have maintained a garden in my suburban backyard. I have grown tomatoes, basil, chard, squash, strawberries etc. It was this passion from a young age which led me to apply to Cornell University in the agricultural sciences department. As an agricultural science major at Cornell University I have taken a variety of classes which mirror the depth and complexity of the field of agriculture. Classes that encompass this depth include Field Cropping Systems, Communication and the Environment, Dairy Cattle Principles, and Financial Accounting. This combination of courses gave me the ability to view the field of agriculture from different perspectives and to synthesize knowledge learned in every course to form a holistic view of the field. I found that agricultural science is broad so I double majored in plant sciences to focus more on the aspect of agriculture that attracted me to the field in the first place, plants. Courses such as Soil Science, Organic Chemistry and The Nature of Plants allowed me to further investigate the physiology of plants and the biotic and abiotic factors that affect their growth such as the soil. This course will help me better understand the concepts of soil mechanics and crop biology which I studied in my undergraduate career. The graduate level statistics course among other classes, will allow me to explore concepts that will be crucial for the progression of my career. I believe that by taking rigorous courses I will achieve a more holistic view of the field of crop and soil science field. This will make me a better decision maker and in the long run a better leader due to my ability to consider both the depth and complexity of issues present in the
