The path to pharmacy started with me working on another passion: creative floral design. It is passion because it has given me an outlet to not only be creative but to also help others, to uplift them, to express emotions for whatever the occasion may be. While working at my mother’s flower shop, I was able to meet Nancy. We had many conversations together. She asked me about my future, what I wanted to do. I responded that I wanted to help uplift people; she suggested that I pursue pharmacy, a different pathway to help people feel better. She laid out all the characteristics of a great pharmacist: the attention to patient’s needs, the compassion for the wellbeing of the patients, the empathy towards patients’ worries and concerns. Traits that Nancy believed I had. It wasn’t until much later, when I was able to work with Nancy that I was able to see it firsthand. Working as a pharmacy technician at Oregon Health and Science University, I was able to work with my role model and learn from her. I got to see how much she devotes her attention towards her technicians; only a pharmacist that work as a team with her technicians and patients can assure adequate care. While juggling my time between college and helping my mother’s flower shop, I struggled to obtain the grades I felt necessary to get into pharmacy school. I allowed my test anxiety to build up as studies became more difficult. Doubt of ever getting into pharmacy school crept into my mind. Despite all of the difficulties and insecurities, I persevered by working harder and proactively seeking out resources to help me study, such as working with tutors, professors, and study groups to reinforce my learning. I knew, and still know, that pharmacy was my ultimate goal and I was not willing to give it
