Since I was a little girl I wanted to be a dentist. I had always changed my mind of what I wanted to be because everything was interesting to me. By the time I was 13, 1 confirmed that I wanted to be a dentist because my cousin was studying to become a dentist and she used to teach me everything she knew and it was really interesting to me. Also every time I went to the dentist it amazed me how they can fix a tooth in such a short time. That made me sign up for the dental assisting program at Warren. The first part of the program was practicing the skills to assist the dentist and the second part of the program was actually interning at a dental clinic. To get there I would have to get my bachelor’s degree in either chemistry or in business. To get into a dental school they do not require any specific degree. What they do require is that I take two semesters of biology with lab, general chemistry with lab, organic chemistry with lab, and physics with lab. Dental schools prefer people who maintain a high GPA while taking harder classes. They also want people who have leadership, health-related work and research, and community service experience. Not only do I have to have all those requirements but I also have to take the Dental Admission Test during my junior year. If I pass the test and I get accepted into a dental, I can finish my bachelor’s degree while I attend a dental school. The first two years of dental school are classroom-based. They cover physiology, anatomy, microbiology, radiology, dental techniques, pharmacology, and practice management. The third- and fourth-year is all about rotating through clinics in surgery, restorative dentistry, pediatric dentistry, and much more. To become a licensed dentist, I would have to graduate from a CODA- accredited training program, take the National Board Dental Examinations, and pass practical examination covering clinical skills. Once I graduate from dental school I have to go to either go to an orthodontics graduate program or an oral surgeon graduate program.
