Students in high school and college endure the same questioning almost everyday: “What are you going to be?” For many students, their career choice flip-flops multiple times and will most likely change at least once before graduating college. For those wishing to go into the healthcare field, but not desiring to become a doctor, there is another path median of the more extreme courses of nurse and physician. The glorious light shining in the middle is a nurse practitioner. Because of its ambiguous nature, many people are not aware of the differences between a nurse and a nurse practitioner.
I am interested in your New Graduate Nurse Residency Program. I graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing from the University of Massachusetts Boston and recently obtained my MA RN license in August 2015. I choose to be an RN because I love learning about the anatomy and physiology of the human body and working with people. When I was a little girl, I would watch the Discovery Health channel instead of watching cartoons. In high school, I became interested in social justice work when I did a month long volunteer service trip to India.
A career as a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner is a natural extension of my personal, educational, and research experiences. Although my path to nursing has not been a straight line, every experience that put me on this path has shaped my passion and dedication to psychiatric nursing. After losing loved ones to suicide at a young age, I made a promise to myself and to them that I would dedicate my life to helping individuals struggling with mental illness. The first eight years of my life, I spent in India where I was born. Growing up I was constantly reminded by my parents that I needed to make them proud by getting a good job and living a good lifestyle. They told me this because they did not want to see me live a hard life like they did. When I was nine years old, I moved from India to the United States of America. The reason why I moved to America was not because I was living a bad life in India, it was so that I could have a better education and more opportunities in life.
My Intent to Be a Nurse Practitioner Coming from a third world country where there aren’t many opportunities for work and funding for education, proceding to nursing school was a grand opportunity. The privilege to attend a government subsidized school where top students in the region compete to get into the program that allowed only 60 students per year was indeed a blessing. As clinical rotations began, what was once considered a mere opportunity evolved into a true passion for caring as I truly love and enjoy nursing and helping people.

In the world of college, there are many majors or professions to choose from. Whatever career I choose to take, I know that there are many doors open for me to walk through. Planning for life after high school, I am considering going into the medical field to become a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Nurse (NICU). A NICU Nurse is a nurse who cares for premature and critically ill newborns that are born in need of immediate medical attention.

Ever since I can remember I have always wanted to make a difference and help anyone in need that I possibly could. From the start of my childhood, I can recall helping my mother care for my great grandparents, so they would be able to live out the rest of their lives from their home, instead of in a nursing home. As a young child it was extremely difficult to live with and watch my loved ones deteriorate as they got older, as their condition got worse and worse, and saw my mother having a difficult time keeping up with caring for both of my great grandparents 24/7, it put a lot of stress on the family. Personal Statement I am interested in studying for a degree in the Mental Health Nursing in your university, and I would like to make my career in this noble profession. I first considered nursing as a career some years ago, after I lost my father to a chronic kidney disease. The role played by the nurses in terms of care while he was in hospital and after his death was quite overwhelming. Although I had my first degree in Agricultural Economics, but this nothing in compare to the passion I later developed for nursing after the death of my father. I have since developed myself in health and social care sector by training and updating my skills.
