Looking back on my four years as an FFA member of the New Lexington FFA Chapter, I can name several skills I’ve learned that I truly believe got me to where I am today. I remember my freshman self. Too nervous and shy to stand up and say the FFA motto in front of my Plant and Animal Science class. Twelve short words to recite for bonus points in class. I knew it, but was just too shy to stand up.

I joined the National FFA Organization March of my sophomore year in 2015. I didn't really know what I was getting myself into, just that my teacher needed another participant for the Vet Science CDE. I agreed to come to practice and eventually compete at the state contest. This was the beginning of my FFA career. We won the state contest, and worked through the summer to head to National Convention that fall and finish with a gold-rating.

A leader is able to gain an audience’s attention because of their personality, morality, and how they hold themself. It is important for a leader to be organized, compassionate, able to compromise but also be firm on what they believe, and be a person who people look up to and aspire to be. I was part of an organization called National Charity League and this organization helped grow women’s confidence, public speaking skills, time management, and organizational skills. Each month, each class holds meetings to plan and discuss projects that follow the class’s focuses. This past year Class of 2023 philanthropic focus is children, cultural focus is international food, and for leadership we are focusing on self care and reflecting on the NCL experience.

I’ve attended numerous COLTs (Chapter Officer Leadership Training), a 24 hour FFA officer training that happens three times a year, learning about Time management, new ways to bring members to your chapter, brainstorming ideas, and the list goes on. Additionally, I’ve attended Peoria Mini Leadership camp’s, National FFA Convention, NDLC camp out’s, District CDE competitions, and local chapter officer training with a private session with former state FFA officers, and countless hours during both chapter and officer meetings. During and after each of these, I’ve learned how to enhance my abilities to become a better leader, to get to know my colleagues better and understand how they think, and most importantly, I’ve learned about what type of person I’d like to become and who I am. Area FFA Officer Essay There are several reasons why I want to be an Area 15 FFA officer. The principal reason that I want to be an officer is for the learning experience that it will provide. Along with learning various new objectives, being an area officer will help me develop and better some of the leadership skills that I already have. Not only would being an area officer provide personal benefit, I could use the skills and knowledge that I gain to help benefit my chapter. College is so expensive, making it hard for some families or individuals to pay for college education. In today’s economy, a lot of jobs and even most promotions require a college degree. With the cost of education being so high, many potential students have avoided higher education for fear of debt. However, if more people could get their college degree after high school, it would not only help the individuals but also society as a whole. Therefore, the United States of America should provide free post-secondary education for all its citizens.
