When discussing future career choices for myself, I have jumped through many options over the past couple years. Recently, psychology crosses my mind often when asked what job I strive for through my studies. My current interest is the brain and how it functions, all the mental disorders, and how different actions can affect it. The study of psychology’s main focus is the source of my interest. The specific field I would like to go into is the science side of psychology. It allows me to be hands on in testing labs and the main goal of this job is to be able to save lives, or even preserving the brain for a longer time than originally thought. There will be some things that people will share that is sad and weighing that will get to the psychologist but the psychologist is that patient’s soundboard. The psychologist is paid to listen to them and they need to be able to be strong in front of the patient to keep their credibility. Also, the psychologist has to be comfortable with the weight the patients put on them. The patient extremely relies on them and maybe they might be the only person in their life that they can talk to about the situation. Mental disabilities surround the topic of the brain and how it functions. The psychologist needs to be able to understand how the brain works to be able to treat the patient. This interests me because I love understanding why people do what they do. Knowing how different brains work and knowing that no two people have the same brain attracts me to this field of study. Understanding the kinds of mental disorders associated with altering how one thinks or moves is intriguing, that’s why I want to go into this field. I don’t necessarily want to help people. Luckily, according to “What is a Neuropsychologist and How to Become One”, one of the schools I am considering, UNC Chapel Hill, offers a Bachelor’s, Master’s, and a Doctorate degree in general psychology. If I decide to take that route, after getting an associate’s degree at Rockingham Community College, I would be able to get most, if not all of my necessary coursework done through UNC Chapel Hill. Some necessary coursework to be certified is a four-stage process. “The first is a review of credentials; demands are more rigorous for those who graduated in 2005 or later. The candidate must then pass a written examination which covers concepts like general clinical psychology, brain-behavior relationships, and clinical neuropsychology practice; it is administered in four annual testing windows (What is a Neuropsychologist and How to Become One).” After all the work and money put into the programs, I will be able to go into
