Ever since I was young, I have always loved and had compassion for animals and the world we live on. I can remember loving going to zoo’s, aquariums, and even pet stores when I was little. So, when it was time to start thinking about what I wanted my major to be in college it wasn’t very difficult to decide on Biology. Biology has a wide variety of fields you can study, and I’m mainly interested in the Zoology and Ecology aspect of the major. Zoology is someone who studies animals and how they interact with the world around them. Ecology is very similar to zoology, but it is the relations of organisms to one another and to their physical surroundings. What I would mainly want to be doing as a Zoologist would be working outdoors on the field researching an animal in their natural habitat. Fieldwork can require you to travel to different parts of the world, so you can get up close and personal with the animal you’re researching. This can sound amazing, but you could be placed in a location with not many modern amenities that were used to having every day. Field workers also need to be prepared to work in almost any type of weather and climate area. Zoologists can also work in laboratories and offices. These are the people who are spending little to no time in the field and they are making observations about the data the field workers collected and writing reports to present and publish for students and scholars to learn about. Zoologist work full time and their hours can be long and irregular based on what animal they are studying. First you must have your high school diploma to be accepted into a college with an area of study in Biology. You then will need to earn your bachelor’s degree in an Zoology, Wildlife biology, Ecology, or a closely related field. If you were considering doing higher level research or scientific work, you would need to earn you masters or your PH.D. Other no school requirements are internships or volunteer programs.
