Have you ever seen a 7 year old busboy at a restaurant? At that age I became one at my family's Caribbean restaurant. Yes being a 7 year old busboy is a bit crazy, but it is very much realistic. Working at that age up until now has given me many experiences both socially and economically. I found it easy walking up to a total stranger and starting a conversation.
Many assume babysitting can be done by any moron that knows how to change a diaper, nevertheless, that’s not true. The last time I changed a diaper was 2 years ago and I refuse to do so again after my cousin decided to pee on my hand. It was like an arrow hitting a target – impressive but painfully accurate. There is hidden intellectualism in this area that plenty doesn’t fully understand. Babysitting can be considered hidden intellectualism because it allows me to adopt intellectual skills such as patience, critical thinking, and time management.
Feeding, watching, and playing with children has been my main concerns on weekends. Along with responsibility, I have learned to be patient. A child will most likely never do what I tell them to do the first time, so I must keep repeating my words and actions. Patience is key to babysitting, because if I don’t have that characteristic then I am likely to explode and cause emotional or physical damage to a child. As a result of this tremendous volunteer service, I have learned that I am a role model to many children.
Currently, I am pursuing a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Interdisciplinary Studies with areas of study in Psychology and Criminal Justice. A Bachelor’s degree in these areas of study, can open the doors to many different career paths ranging from human services to research to counseling. Personally, I would like to seek a career that will allow me to have an impact on other people’s lives. For this reason, I choose to explore the career of a Foster Care Placement Specialist. To better understand the, job responsibilities, employment requirements and pros and cons of this career I decided to seek counsel from my friend, Rachel Zimmerman, a Family Services Specialist with the Virginia Department of Social Services.
Doctor of Social Work Program Application Personal Statement Ashley Newberry LCSW, LISW As I child, I was introduced to the human service field in a unique way. For as long as I can remember, my mother has had a human service profession and provided me with daily examples of how to help others. One of my earliest memories is riding out a hurricane while we stayed in the adult group home where my mother worked, assisting with safety measures for residents and providing comfort to her community. My mother worked in multiple residential programs throughout my life, specializing her work with individuals with developmental and physical disabilities.
As a mom who will be returning to the workforce after graduation an issue that is important to me and I’m sure many other parents as well is finding a local, safe, educational, affordable childcare to send my daughter to while I’m working. I want to find a place where I feel like my child will grow and learn new things, but also a place where I feel she is safe and well-cared for. Ideally I would love to leave her with family, but due to geographic locations, daycare is looking like the best option.
When you get older are you considering going into foster care? My answer to this question is yes. There are three reasons as to why I would like to participate in the foster care programs. First is because I want to help the children who are not able to be with their parents at the moment. Second is because i love children.
There are many programs out there that are nationally recognized to work with children. With being recognized through these programs, it helps you and your program to be better known by those who want their children in the best possible care. Many states have their own requirements of licensing when it comes to childcare centers. A huge part of the licensing program is to have background checks and to teach the future staff CPR or what to do in case of emergencies. It is also mentioned that many different careers could be used from the same majors that also deal with helping children.
As many would guess education is likely the main thing that someone who hires an early childhood professional looks at. This along with someones work background are very important parts to hiring an early childhood professional. Although these are very important, there are many other very important things that are looked for when hiring an early childhood professional. In the article “12 Characteristics of Effective Early Childhood Teacher”, on NAEYC.org, Laura J. Colker talks about what makes a good early childhood educator.
Work with children Throughout my high school and college years, I have had several experiences with children that have all played a part in shaping my love for working with children. During high school, I spent two summers nannying for two young school aged children. Working with these siblings really made me realize how much fun I have working with children and watching them grow. Once I came to college, I started another babysitting job working with two four year old twin girls.
When I first started babysitting it was for a family with two children that were under the age of four, a little boy named Bentley and a newborn girl named Charlotte . The little boy has low functioning autism, which mean he was unable to speak and did things differently than other children. It was difficult to watch them at times, charlotte would be crying and fussy. Bentley would be crying for all my attention directed towards him, but he also had days where he did not want my attention and wanted me to leave him alone. Dinner time was always one of the hardest times of the night.
The arrival of a new baby, especially the first always marks a new beginning for a mother. It comes with a lot of challenges more so if the mother is less knowledgeable about baby care. Take such as cleaning the baby for the first time, or feeding, it is not easy. The baby is still fragile and slippery and needs a special care. But if the mother is not ready for all these, or maybe, does not have any knowledge on what to do, the baby’s life might be endangered since the baby needs a special care which only the mother can give.
