My name is Olivia Oetken and I am a senior in high school. As many of us near the end of our senior year of high school we all begin to think seriously about pursuing our education further and what we want to come of it. This is also the time when most of us pick a major. These educational goals that we form at an early age reflect our desires most truly because we have yet to be discouraged by hardly anything. When I was just a little girl I already knew what I wanted to be when I “grew up.” I wanted to be a baby nurse. My babies were my most prized possessions. I loved them and took care of them. They were real to me. More than a decade later, many things in my life has changed, but not my love and compassion for babies.

I plan to give all attention possible to achieve this objective. I am determined to succeed at college, so I will have the resources and tools needed to care for the sick babies. Over the past two years I have worked at Pleasant Manor Care Center here in Mount Pleasant. While most teenagers are hanging out with friends or going to extracurricular activities I spend my evenings and weekends working with patients at the care center. I have always had a heart and passion for people no matter what the age. Most of the elderly people who live in the care center have no family members and have to live their last days alone. Elderly people are precious. They are somebody’s parent or grandparent. I care for the residents basic needs; feeding them, getting them ready for bed, taking them to the restroom, or simply talking to the residence who are too ill to get out of bed. Many nights are spent quieting their fears by praying with them. My passion to be a neonatal nurse was fueled even more by the experience I have had taking care of the elderly. My goal of becoming a neonatal nurse is certain to be tested by many challenges, but my passion for people will keep me from failing to reach this
