“I won’t take these medicines. I am too young to need them” were the words I heard in my house daily. My uncle was diagnosed with hypertension in his early 30’s but would often refuse to take his anti-hypertensive medication, as he did not believe he needed them. Tragically, he died a few years later from an aortic dissection. During our mourning period for my uncle, my maternal grandfather also died due to a myocardial infarction. Losing both of them suddenly during my formative year was devastating but also gave me the strength and desire to devote a career to medicine. We are supposed to educate the patients and their families regarding health and illness, and empower them with the knowledge to improve their condition. During my internship in India, I was given the responsibility to supervise a polio vaccination program. I spent hours trying to educate illiterate and skeptical parents about the importance of vaccinating their children against polio. I helped to design a new strategy to teach parents and enhance their engagement in health care and our vaccination program. In a short time, our center saw three times the number of vaccinations than the previous year. This success further enforced my belief that medicine is not just about a doctor telling a patient what they need to do but rather displaying empathy and understanding so that patients would believe in their own care plans. My long-term goal is to run a preventative medical clinic and conduct education sessions for patients with regards to hypertension, diabetes, obesity, and smoking. In the beginning of my personal statement, I had mentioned about my uncle’s death due to lack of awareness about diet, lifestyle changes, the proper way of taking medication and consequences of the disease.
