8.2 Social Context: lots of hospitals and other healthcare settings are creating delivery models that include various integrative healths. Integrative health combines with traditional and western approaches with interventions to facilitate maximum healing. Holistic nursing has flourished within these integrative care systems in various parts of the world. A lot need to be done to ensure that healthcare providers treat patients in whole and not based on the presenting disease. A lot of improvement in patient outcome has been noted in settings that patients are treated holistically. Concept 10: Concept of Health Promotion This concept is taking from module 8 in which Pender (1996) define health promotion as “activities directed toward increasing the level of well being. Health promotion is not disease oriented; that is, no specific problem is being avoided. According to WHO, Health promotion is defined as the process of enabling people to increase control over, and to improve, their health. It goes above focus on individual behavior towards a wide range of social and environmental intervention. Health promotion behaviours if taught to patients would prevent the occurrence of disease. 10.1 Personal Context: I engage in activities that would promote my health and well being. Usually, I practice proper hand hygiene, waste management, physical exercise, have enough rest and sleep and stay away from Alcohol or substance abuse. This is done through health education of patients and mass sensitization programme being carried out for HIV/AIDS awareness and distribution of condoms to Ebola survivors to preventing them infecting their partners with the Ebola Virus which could stay up to 6 months in the semen. We also teach them on practicing proper hand hygiene and environmental cleanliness that would help prevent them from getting cholera and other diarrheal disease. 10.4 Current Research: Findings shows that there are a lot of Health Promotion Research Centers which conducts community-based research that promotes the health and well-being of young boys and girls as well as older adults, particularly those with lower incomes and in ethnic/cultural minority populations most at risk of health disparities.
