On Monday, October 12, 2015 I went with a group of girls to the Lone Tree Retirement Center to complete two hours of community service. We walked in thinking that we would be painting nails and playing games with the residents, but instead we were met at the door by Leon and instructed to paint parking spots. Leon led us outside to the materials and gave us the full instructions of how to complete our task. Our task consisted of four people the first person would scrape the old paint off, the second would broom the dirt and debris off, the third would roll the new paint onto the lines, and the fourth would push the paint cart. My job consisted of scraping the old paint and brooming the dirt off, so that new paint could be applied.
In the summer of 2013 at a family barbeque I nonchalantly asked my aunt if there was any way I could volunteer at her job, an intercity Salvation Army Core, throughout the week. Asking this simple question that I initially didn’t put much consideration into, steered to far more than I could had ever anticipate. I projected what my experience would be like at the core playing out different scenarios in my head. I expected it to be similar to every other volunteer experience I had, simply assist the employees and perchance meet a few people along the way. I thought I would be working in a back pantry categorizing and bundling foods into care packages having minimal encounters.
The organization, which I decided to volunteer two hours of my day to, was Cumac. Cumac is located in Paterson, New Jersey and they work to serve the people in the counties of Passaic, Paterson, and Northern New Jersey. They work with a staff of 21 and volunteers from all over to help people in need with food and supplies they would need to survive. Their mission statement is: “CUMAC feeds people and changes lives. It works to alleviate hunger and its root causes for those in need in Paterson, Passaic County, and northern New Jersey.”
Some recent volunteer activities/events were free yoga in the park, a canned good drive, and a free dental clinic for those in need. A graduate
The majority of the ride is painstakingly quiet, with Nero being too hesitant to break the silence and Avilio seemingly more tense than usual. He sits in a rigid position much too harsh to be natural and his knuckles are white around the wheel. Nero guesses that something must have gone wrong in town, but feels that if he asked, Avilio would drive the car into the nearest building. It doesn’t take them long to reach a large dirt field and Avilio steps on the break so abruptly that Nero has to slam his hands on the dash to prevent his face from making impact with the leather.
I organized multiple clothing, food, and book drives. While I was a Girl Scout, I earned my Bronze and Silver award: the second and third highest awards a Girl Scout can earn. Some other examples of events that I’ve planned to give back to my community are cheer clinics, movie nights, and 8th grade prom. I also have gift wrapped at the KMCC during the holiday season, tutored students at the Intermediate School, volunteered at the Ramstein Bazaar, picked up trash around the base, and bagged groceries at the commissary multiple times. Taking action in the community is important to me because I like to make positive impacts that benefit the lives of
I also have volunteered at my stuffed bags many times helping children in the foster program. I have been very active in competitive sports since 1st
I still tried to do and did many things to help, such as donating food for people in need, cleaning trash on the side of roads, volunteering at the public library, and helping out at the school garden. Overall I had __ service hours written down on my log, which did not document everything I had done. My overall goal is to make our town a better place for the future, which is why I always try my best to help the people in our society. This is why I believe that I show the characteristics of
One day, I went to the TLC Donation Garden (TLCDG), which is a place that grows food for the BritVil food pantry. Originally, I planned on going to get
I have volunteered at my hometown 's hospital, Los Robles for 4 years now as a floater and ER volunteer. As a floater, I would go around the hospital doing various tasks and in the ER I would have to check in patients and monitor them and their families. At my university, I have volunteered at the Veterans Home. Currently, I am the secretary of my university 's AMSA
One day I will never forget is the first day I came to Job Corps. It felt unreal! Just thinking about really leaving the city and going to school; the people, food, rooms everything was on my mind. I was already prepared for the day and actually I was anxious to leave and start school.
Another activity we have been involved in is volunteering at the annual Bauer Farm Harvest Festival, which led me to another service organization I have been involved
I am interested in volunteering at Baylor Scott & White Hospital because I want to learn more about how a hospital works. I have always wondered how exactly a hospital is run and how nurses and doctors are able to give their best to each and every patient at the hospital. I want to learn how everything is processed and kept organized. I’m also interested in working a professional atmosphere just to see how it is like. I’ve always gone to hospitals to visit the sick and injured and have recently become curious about how it is like ‘behind the scenes’.
Often in life, we come across situations that may stretch us and challenge us, finding ourselves forced to get out of our comfort zone. Volunteering is definitely not for everyone, people may not have the adequate time, confidence, knowledge. But that does not mean you avoid the situation at all times, you must allow yourself to step out of your comfort zone and experience things that you would never think about doing. On the first week of volunteering it was a bit intense for me, as I found it difficult and little bit sad to watch the women living the way they do, for some reason I felt that they were always missing their children and grandchildren. Some of the residents did not even have family so they never got visitations.
Volunteering is a way of helping others. It is giving a person 's time and ability to help someone who may be in need of help. Not only does volunteering help others, but what they may not know is that it can be helpful to themselves. It is a great way for someone to interact with others in their community. It gives someone that time to themselves while also creating bonds when they are doing the greater good.
