Reading Summary: Chapter 10 focused on the different types of personality theories including psychoanalytic perspective, humanistic perspective, social cognitive perspective, and trait perspective. Psychoanalytic perspective was developed by Freud and emphasizes the belief that the unconscious mind and the instinctual drives of a person effects their personality development, especially during their early childhood. Many of Freud’s initial students/followers later developed their own theories within the psychoanalytic perspective. For example, Horney disagreed with Freud’s paternalistic ideas surrounding women in his theory. I could take them every day and probably learn something new about myself, every time. Out of all the tests, the first one surprised me the most. I was not expecting to get “balanced” between introversion and extroversion, though now that that idea is a possibility, I can see where that result can come from. The one that seems to remain constant (as I have taken this test before in high school) is the Jung Typology Test. I always receive INFP, which I honestly really like. The part of my personality that bothers me the most though, is my tendency not to socialize. Socializing over the internet is easy, and to most, I appear to be friendly and outgoing, but in person I can be quite awkward and shy. To me my “social boldness” definitely correlates with Bandura’s theory about self-efficacy. I no longer try to engage in social activities for the belief that some dire consequences would surely fall upon me. The same could go for my “agreeableness”. I have been told so many times that I am a nice person, which results in me not doubting the fact that I am nice. It’s pretty interesting to think about how interactions with others has shaped my personality, as well was other unconscious forces. I found myself agreeing with a bit of everything in each theory, and I find the topic of the human personality extraordinarily
