A learner is comprised of countless diverse skills and abilities. Each learner is unique and has his/ her own distinct way of understanding new material. My personality consists of an intrapersonal, interpersonal, visual learner, who is social, security-oriented, and an introverted, intuitive, feeling, judging human. All these results create who I am as a person and who I am as a learner.
Learning Styles Inventories
According to my Find Your Strengths (N.D) inventory, my personality is categorized as mainly intrapersonal and interpersonal. Intrapersonal means that I like processing new information by myself. I prefer to sit and think or write about my thoughts rather than verbalizing them in a group. Oddly enough, my second highest strength is interpersonal. This concept frustrated me as believed that at least one of the inventories are incorrect. After contemplation and some discussions with friends and family, I have concluded that all the inventories are in fact correct. The authentic me is a social introvert who thinks in pictures, acts based on emotions, and does best when there is security.
Relation to brain-based learning
Each brain is wired, based on past experiences, to learn and process information differently. For a teacher, understanding this concept is crucial to creating a successful learning environment. If the students are primarily visual learners, base the majority of the teaching on visual aids, but it is important to include other learning styles as well. The teacher cannot assume that one-brain-fits all. Teachers who know their students’ idiosyncrasies and their preferred learning style will be better able to equip students for succeeding in the future.
