Many people have lost their lives, or taken the lives of others as a result of distracted driving. The main distraction has been the cellphone. Many people overestimate their ability to multi-task, and as a result they carelessly engage in cellphone use while behind the wheel. To prevent unnecessary accidents and tragedies, texting while driving should be illegal.

People are unable to see the parallel between texting while driving and drinking and driving. Some even argue that texting while driving shouldn't be an enormity whatsoever as if lives haven't been lost as a result of both. Texting while driving incapacitates the driver in the same way alcohol would. Both impair the senses, and could result in delayed reaction time. Taking your eyes off the road for even a fraction of a second could result in an accident.

There should be campaigns and ads that stress the similarity of texting while driving and drinking and driving. There should also be campaigns and ads that make people aware of their vulnerability. That is the beauty of technology. There's no period in which the message has to be seen. It won't kill anyone to wait until they reach their destination to respond to a message. However, the lives of many would be in danger if one decided to answer while still behind the wheel. Text messages were designed to be a convenient way to communicate; it would be pretty inconvenient to respond to a text while on the road. The driver would literally have to divide their attention between operating a vehicle and typing a coherent response. Both require too much focus to be done simultaneously.
