In the 1840’s there was a wave of democratization created after Jackson’s presidency. It was created the value of the common man, and the importance of every person who was in the government. Of course, there were exceptions to this rule as there still certain groups like blacks or women that were viewed as inferior, but the majority of the population felt like they had worth. This led to series of reforms: hospitals for the mentally ill, schools for people with physical disabilities, the temperance movement, and labor unions. Save money. Live better. Working for the one of the largest and most lucrative companies on the face of the planet can be difficult at times. More often than not every time you walk in to a Walmart you will not recognize anyone in there. Screaming red faced babies that can’t have what they want and befuddled customers asking questions that I don’t know the answer to are an everyday occurrence.
The Freshman 15 is a thought that crosses the minds of most future college students, but most say that it won’t happen to them. “We always hear about the rights of democracy, but the major responsibility of it is participation.” (Marsalis). Politics influences almost everything we do in our lives and how we do it. Therefore, political participation in the American government, a democracy, is the best way to be the change you want to see in your community and in your country. One small yet important and effective way to do this is by contacting your government and voicing your opinions, and when I wanted to raise the issue of immigration reform for the DACA recipients, I researched the issue, wrote a letter, and sent it.
Never judge a book by it’s cover, but that's all people do these days is judge, judge, judge. Some may say welding is a dangerous, unpredictable, a harmful thing to participate in. Some might even ponder on the word “Weld” and think if they know what it is. But only if you've done it then you will never know what it feels like (or what it is), the rush of adrenalin and the art it can create. People who weld learn to be themselves, they become more alert and welding can help with further career choices.
