Human trafficking has been a growing problem in not just the United States, but frankly the entire world. The following are some disturbing facts about human trafficking. Around the world, the average cost of a slave is just $90. It is estimated that almost 80% of trafficking is for sexual purposes. And possibly the worst, there are approximately 30 million slaves around the world to date. That is equal to about 10% of the population of the united states. With these numbers continuously rising, it raises the question, how do we stop human trafficking? The common “solution” is to raise the penalty for traffickers that are caught. It seems that the only response that brings is the raised price of slaves, and the higher demand for trafficking. While this crime cannot be completely stopped, there are ways to slow it down. Some states and countries are trying, and being successful with things like: creating full time task forces devoted solely to the prevention of trafficking, putting human trafficking into school curriculum to raise awareness, and passing legislation that pardons trafficking victims that committed crime during their time as a victim.
