The topic of abortion is arguably the most controversial subject of all time, taking the lives of not only the unborn babies killed in the act, but in some extreme cases, activists on both sides of the debate have been killed for their beliefs. Abortion is the most frequently performed surgery on adults in the United States and is responsible for an average of 125,000 human casualties per day worldwide (worldometers.info). These fatalities are not reported on the evening news, but the lost lives of unborn children are equally valuable as those already fortunate enough to be alive. The claim of uncertainty of when life begins, or the idea that life begins once the baby is born is deemed inaccurate by medical textbooks that consistently agree that the life of a human begins at conception. Those who claim life begins at birth with the reasoning that we celebrate birthdays rather than conception days do so incorrectly; the celebration of birthdays is cultural, not scientific ( ). Even if any true uncertainty were present, morally speaking, the benefit of the doubt should be in favor of preserving the life of the unborn child. Similarly, considering the unborn to be merely a cluster of cells or blobs of tissue is a tactic used to dehumanize the babies, making the termination of their lives seem less cruel. Even more dehumanizing than calling a baby a “cluster of cells” is the view that unborn babies should not be granted basic human rights with the logic that since they are not fully developed, the unborn are valued less than animals and should not be granted any Constitutional rights.
