With the passage of a ban on abortion in Brazil, there are a number of possible outcomes which would greatly affect the Unites States. Given past incidents of American citizens leaving the United States (U.S.) due to disagreement with certain laws, it is not unreasonable to this that individuals might migrate to Brazil. Recently a large number of immigrants have begun to seek asylum in Canada, for fear of being deported. In a similar vein, there is also the possibility of a movement of Brazilian citizens to the U.S. Such an incident could cause further strain to immigration. A less severe version could be Brazilian citizens traveling to the U.S. specifically to attain an abortion. If this was the case, pro-life people could argue that the U.S. would become an abortion center for other countries. In essence, this would be pouring fuel on the fire of debate and potentially increasing the scale of the current conflict.
Another possible effect of the passage of an abortion ban in another country so close to the U.S. could be U.S. citizens wanting even more fervently for the same law to be passed. Similarly, Brazil is a largely Catholic nation. According to the Catholic church, abortion is a sin and should not be legal. The ban on abortion was proposed by Christian men within the legislative house. Such circumstance suggests that there is potential for religion to have a larger influence on governmental systems. If the ban were to pass, then Christian politicians (pro-life) in our own system might take that as support for their cause.
