During the Holocaust, 6 million Jews were killed in the span of 4 years and people are disgusted by that number. What they don’t know is that every day, 23,000,000 land animals are slaughtered for the industrial food chain. This is a huge problem in our society that is not dealt with nearly enough. The industrial food chain is a bad system for helpless animals to be put into. Animal slaughter is full of negative impacts.
Animal slaughter is a major contributor to pollution to the environment. Before animals are slaughtered, they have to be fed. In this food there is phosphorus. “Animal Ethics,” tells us that when the animals are transported to the houses, they are crowded closely together with little to no protection from any sort of weather. During their transportation, tThe animals are starved for the whole drive so that the drivers don’t have to deal with the waste. These drives can last for days and the conditions stay the same throughout the whole experience. Slaughterhouse workers have shared their experiences with loading the animals off of the trucks and the employees share about how ruthless they are with the animals. Employees share that they have given pigs heart attacks, broken cows bones, and snapped animals necks. The average process to get an animal out of the truck, if the animal is resistant, is to put hooks in its backside and pull. When you pull on the hooks, it often leads to intestines and muscles being ripped open, or in more serious situations, being ripped out. If the animals collapse they hook their cheeks and drag them. Keep in mind the animals are still alive as these things are happening to them. If the animals are not already dead or unconscious as they enter the slaughter house, they are immobilized. How are they immobilized? They are stunned with electric rods until they are unconscious. For larger animals such as cows, they are placed in stunning boxes. These boxes contain the animal so that it cannot move while a slaughterhouse employee shoots it. There are many variants of this type of stunning container, the stun box being the most popular. The “National Institute of Health” says that animals are going to be slaughtered anyway and slaughterhouses get it done quicker and in larger quantities. While this is true and animals will be killed anyways, there are many more ways to do it. You do not need to torture animals to kill
