Increasing the severity of animal abuse by giving more prison time and harsher punishment can cut back on crimes such as dog fighting and greyhound racing, which brings drugs, violence and gambling to the areas they are in (Wyoming Tribune-Eagle). With dog fighting being only a misdemeanor and not a felony, the police don 't have the resources or time to put into it to investigate reported cases of it, and with the sentence being so minor, those who make a living off of fighting and racing dogs view a short 6 month sentence and a minor fine as just a sacrifice for the money. It has also been proven that people who harm animals for fun are most likely to move on to larger targets, like humans in the future. Keeping these offenders in prison for a longer time, would place them in a monitored environment for an extended period of time where mental instabilities can be picked up and taken care of before they hurt someone or something else.
