Children in Adult Prisons
Imagine this, a small child who is no older that 11. His father recently was incarcerated and his older brothers have been killed in a gang related shooting. All that is left is an 11-year-old boy, who now at 11, has to find a way to provide for his mother who is working two jobs and his baby sister. This boy now goes out and due to the environment he was raised in, the projects of south central, he gets money the only way he’s ever seen, by the distribution of illicit drugs. He is caught and sentenced to 20 years in federal prison. His mother left devastated, alone, and has to find away to provide for the baby. As crazy as this may sound according to the national census of 2011, in 2010 21% of all children in America are living in poverty. A common saying of “Poverty breeds violence” can easily be incorporated into this situation. A child who is raised around poverty and violence by association will not know any better and proceed to portray the actions he has been raised around. This reign of abuse reaches into areas both physically and sexually. Being a child in an adult prison, you are by default infinitely smaller than most inmates, which put you instantly in danger. Also since they are children they are usually easier to rape because they are infinitely smaller and less strong than most others in prison. According to a study done by the National Prison Rape Elimination Commission children are most likely to be raped in adult prisons. Children who are sexually abused tend to sexually offend later on in life. This means that in doing this you are going to create more rapist and sexual offenders when they are released into the general
