Dave Barry said “You will never find anybody who can give you a clear and compelling reason why we observe daylight saving time.” There is no good reason to participate in daylight saving time because it does not have many benefits. Daylight saving time does have a more negative effect on those who participate. Daylight saving time is causing more fatalities, health issues, and a decrease on companies income.
One of the large issues of daylight saving time is the increase in fatalities. According to Wagner and Barnes, “we found a spike in workplace injuries of nearly 6 percent on the Monday following the shift of daylight saving time.” This shows how the time change can put people at a greater risk of harm. The Monday after can be very dangerous and sometimes even life threatening. Calandrillo states, “(t)he time change from daylight to twilight causes a 300 percent increase in fatal vehicle-pedestrian crashes.” The increase of fatalities increased tremendously and is putting people’s lives at risk. The shift in time has a negative impact on people mentally and can even lead to certain sleep disorders. Shifting the clock by an hour is putting peoples health at risk. According to Quintilham el. al., “Burgess et. al. (2013) reinforced the idea that humans may be sensitive to commonly occurring small shifts in time.” Proving that even a small time change could have a negative impact on people's health.
