Losing sleep is never fun, and Daylight Saving Time (DST) doesn’t help. This practice really needs to go, and there are plenty of reasons why. The most obvious one is inconvenience. Resetting clocks and fixing schedules is extremely irritating, not to mention losing that comfortable hour of sleep in the spring. Productivity is also lowered because those few minutes spent changing clocks could have been spent doing something else, like homework. Plus, the loss of sleep reduces concentration and brain processing speed, meaning tasks take longer to complete. It’s estimated that every time the clocks are changed, the US economy loses almost half a billion dollars! DST just complicates these further, forcing companies to compensate using various means and costing the economy even more money. The best way to combat this would be to get rid of DST forever. Since the biggest problems with DST revolve around the shifts in time, an elimination of that time shift also eliminates those problems. Running permanently on DST is a bad idea, because wintertime activities can be heavily impacted by the lack of sunlight during the morning. Not only that, but waking up when it is dark outside is detrimental to your health, as the body adjusts melatonin (the hormone that makes people sleepy) levels according to the light level outside. Running on standard time doesn’t have these drawbacks, making it the better choice. Plus, running completely on standard time isn’t something new. In fact, Saskatchewan doesn’t and runs perfectly fine, as does Arizona, Hawaii, and most of Africa, South America, Asia, and Australia.
