Euthanasia Euthanasia is defined as, “the act or practice of killing or permitting the death of hopelessly sick or injured individuals in a relatively painless way for reasons of mercy” (Merriam-Webster, NA). This is also referred to as mercy killing or assisted suicide, this topic is incredibly controversial because it is dealing with the topic of suicide. Assisted suicide is meant to be an option to let terminally ill individuals pass peacefully and with dignity, this is not an option in most states though because its seen as committing a homicide. Euthanasia cannot be done by just anybody, a doctor or physician must perform the task and only patients who are terminally ill can request this. Assisted suicide may not be legal in every state, but the topic is recognized. In every state they have some law regarding assisted suicide, it is also a topic that’s been discussed outside of the U.S. too. The people most affected by the laws on this topic are those who are sick. The majority of the states say assisted suicide is illegal, so those who are terminally ill don’t have a second option. The reasons why people are either for or against it are what makes it a complicated topic. Some people argue against it because it goes against their beliefs or values and some argue for it because they’re sympathetic to the people seeking this option or they don’t see the harm in it. Our efforts to deal with this problem are that we don’t deal with it. The majority of that states have laws making it illegal to participate in the process.
