According to the first Amendment of the United States Constitution, Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. Freedom of expression is considered the most crucial of all freedom, as it allows for a person to fully express themselves without government intervention. However, we must define what freedom of expression is. It emcompasses freedom of speech and media, but also guarantees everyone’s right to speak and write openly about their point of view. With the recent March for our Lives discussing the topic of gun control, people are speaking out to discuss their safety and how the government is dealing with the topic. The first amendment gives the permission for a person to speak about their ideas and express their opinion on the government. The government can’t force them to stop because it will violate their freedom to speak freely. If Congress or any other form of government wants to stop their protest, then it would be a terribly long and tedious process. Removing an amendment from the constitution is almost impossible because the founding fathers made it that way too stop changing the government here and there. That was the problem with the Articles of Confederation, it was not stable enough to control the country. Just like how citizens are advocating to remove the second amendment, it will not happen with the sheer difficulty it is to abolish an amendment. With the ability to have free speech, it allows for an individual to exploit that freedom and talk poorly about anything they feel like degrading. As an example, the KKK in the Antietam battlefield. They are entitled to their freedom and are allowed to continue on with their organization. Of course this is harmful, but this freedom is embedded in our Bill of Rights. However, freedom of expression has some restrictions to help democracy survive. There are certain phrases you can not say about the government or the president. To give a clear example, “I’m going to kill the president.” Saying that certain sentence will lead to your imprisonment or worse, execucation.
