According to everytownresearch.org, a website that provides statistics on gun violence, “On an average day 93 Americans are killed with guns.” And “for every person killed with a gun two more or injured.” In an effort to reduce gun violence I advocate that congress passes a law that requires everyone to complete a gun safety and handling class before they are permitted to buy a gun. I believe that this class will reduce gun violence as well as reduce the number of illegal guns on the streets of America.
First, the idea behind the gun safety and handling class law is that it must be completed before someone can purchase a gun. Whether or not the class has been completed could be added to a person’s official background check since a background check is already required to purchase a gun at any retailer. While my law is not taking away the rights of the people given to them by the second amendment “the right to bear arms” it is making the process more secure and giving people more knowledge about gun safety and handling. The key to reducing gun violence in the United States is to educate people about the safety and handling of guns as well as keeping guns away from people who could possibly or do suffer from mental illness. An article from CNN states that “People with serious mental illness are three times more likely than those who are not mentally ill to commit violent acts against themselves or others.” It is important that we find a way to evaluate people before they can buy a firearm for the overall safety of the
