Nothing will save you but a heart transplant. But your family is poor, and the insurance won't cover it, so, you're out of luck. No transplant for you. This is exactly the problem that arises in the movie, John Q. John’s son is running the bases during a baseball game when suddenly he passes out. His mother and father rush him to the emergency room. Doctors discover that his son, Mike, needs a heart transplant and he needs it soon. Without a transplant, Mike will die. But his family is poor, and the insurance company won't cover it and the hospital is saying no. How hard will John fight and how far will he go to save his son? Just because someone can't afford health care doesn't mean that they don't deserve the care that they need. Although providing healthcare to individuals who cannot afford it has improved, things still need to change in order to get people the care that they rightfully deserve and that they desperately need. …show more content…

This is defined as “An elective procedure is one that is chosen (elected) by the patient or physician that is advantageous to the patient but is not urgent.” Most patients receiving or waiting to receive a new heart or any organ at all have only one option left, which is to get an organ transplant. People needing organs wouldn't consider the transplant an elective procedure because it is usually the last hope of saving them. In the movie , the head of the hospital, Rebecca Payne, tells John that the surgery Mike needs is considered elective, and that the hmo plan they have will not cover the procedure he needs. Both the doctors and mike's parents know that without the transplant, Mike will die, but the hospital strongly hesitates putting him on the donor
