Former president, William J. Clinton once stated,“We must say no to illegal immigration so we can continue to say yes to legal immigration”(“The American Presidency Project”), which holds much truth to it. Since the U.S./ Mexico border is loosely protected and such a large area, stopping illegal immigration is very tough. The U.S. has tried to set up fences, and guards, but illegal immigrants still find ways to get in and out of the country. The rise in illegal immigration from Mexico to the U.S. has caused internal struggles with congestion, employment, and security in the United States. With that said, controversial solutions have been offered up, but many are still being debated.

According to research statistics, “There were 11.7 million immigrants from mexico living in the U.S. in 2014, and about half of them [an estimated 5.8 million] were in the country illegally” (Gonzalez-Barrera). Donald Trump’s persistent proposal of building the wall along the border is due to the new president’s belief that the wall will greatly decrease the amount of illegal immigrants coming into the country. It’s one thing to look to focus on completely blocking immigration from Mexico to the United States, but it would be wise to also look at the statistics of the situation. It’s noted that “the amount of illegal immigrants from 2014 to 2015 dropped by about 1.1 million” (Gonzalez-Barrera), therefore implying a natural flow of exiting immigrants is beginning to occur. This point is further supported by the continuing fact that from 2013 to 2015, the number of times Mexicans were deported from the United States dropped from 309,807 to 242,456 times (Gonzalez-Barrera). Still, the numbers of illegal immigrants remains fairly high and, because of this, it is widely felt that jobs and residence areas are being taken away from legal American citizens.
