There is a growing debate in this country centered around the legalization of marijuana for both medicinal and recreational purposes. In fact some might say that we live in a recreational drug culture. There is now a few states and even countries that have legalized it, but the debate still remains ongoing. There is a big divide between people’s beliefs on this matter. There are those who think it shouldn’t be legal, and there is others who believe it should be, but that there has to be laws in place to regulate its sale and usage. However, the cold hard truth is, it really doesn’t matter whether there are laws being passed making marijuana legal or not, either way it will still be available and relatively easy to get. Not only is Bud’s opening statement, “marijuana legalization is more effective than prohibition at stopping crime, creating jobs, increasing state revenue, and wiping away the stain of racially charged policy (Bud 2018).” an incorporation of pathos, but it is also an incorporation of logos, and both of these are very powerful rhetorical strategies. In this particular statement, he is implying that the mere legalization of marijuana has reduced crime, created jobs, increased state revenue, and is helping to change old policies that were deemed racially charged. Although, Bud makes this statement without incorporating actual data at that point, he does have a significant amount of statistics elsewhere in the article to back it up. Bud begins the essay by conveying to his readers all of the positive impacts that marijuana legalization has had on the states which have made it legal, and he stays pretty consistent all the way through to the end, where he needed to drive his argument home. Also throughout the article, Bud references many different statistics, and graphs referring to the positive effects that legalizing marijuana has had on the states that have made its consumption
