More than 146 million Americans are poor or have low income. Half of American workers earn $500 dollars or less a week. Many Americans are fighting to keep their homes and are wondering when their next meal will be (35 Statistics about the working poor that will blow your mind). Minimum wage is currently $7.25 per hour throughout the United States. There are some states who choose to make a state law that minimum wage be higher than $7.25. Barack Obama and the United States government was not opposed to raising minimum wage to $10.10, but many workers insist minimum wage should be $15.00 per hour because that is what is needed to support an average lifestyle. As prices rise, people obviously need more money to pay their bills and buy necessities. While those who are against increasing minimum wage would present their main argument as it could result in higher prices for consumers, it hurts low skilled workers, and it results in job loss (Slavov and Gorry). Minimum wages play a large role in today’s society as more than 3 million people work at or below minimum wage (Pathe). Many have started protests to get the minimum wage increased, some even want it to be increased to $15 per hour. President Elect Donald Trump believes that minimum wage should be increased to at least $10 per hour because that is the bare minimum that is needed for a feasible standard of living.
