The average minimum wage employee will make around 15,000 dollars each year for around a 40 hour work week. This is compared to the average American who makes around 51,000 dollars (“average American pay, 2015”). According to the economic policy institute's State of Working Americans 26 percent of americans work at a wage that makes less than 10.55 dollars per hour, this is about 20,000 dollars a year. Many people believe we should raise minimum wage to as high as 15 dollars per hour, which would raise the annual salary of a person working minimum wage to about 30,000 dollars a year which can provide for a family of 5 above the poverty line, according to the U.S. department of health and human services. I believe that you should not be able to support a family on minimum wage of 15 dollars an hour, that kind of pay is far too much money for the little work required in a minimum wage level job. According to a study by the statistic brain institute raising the minimum wage will encourage companies to outsource to other countries that offer lower wages (“Jobs Overseas Outsourcing Statistics”). As well as outsourcing, companies that can't outsource such as restaurants may implement robotic means of getting a task done that would otherwise be done by a person (DePillis). Regarding small business, a 2013 poll given by Jamie Richardson, MBA, shows that raising minimum wage would force small businesses to close because the owners couldn't afford to pay the employees.
