Stick to the Name If somebody named a team after you or your ethnicity, would you feel proud, honored, or offended? This is one of the biggest debates in professional sports today. Many believe that teams with controversial names and mascots are racist and offensive. They think there should be a ban on names such as the Chiefs or the Redskins, for they perpetuate stereotypes that Americans have had about Native Americans since the days of the Wild West. Although their reasons may be strong, there should not be a ban because these names are made to honor Native Americans, most Native Americans don't find these names and mascots offensive, and some names are not as insulting as others. In fact, a survey showed that about 90 percent of 504 surveyed Native Americans didn't find the Redskins name offensive, about 1 percent didn't care, and only approximately 9 percent said they were offended. That's only about 45 people who found this offensive, and about 454 people who didn't! The people surveyed aren't the only Native Americans to not feel this way. Members from the Sioux tribe attempted to file a lawsuit against the NCAA for trying to get rid of North Dakota's name, the Fighting Sioux. They did not win the lawsuit, and the NCAA changed the name to the Fighting Hawks. However, another team was more fortunate. As I mentioned previously, the Seminole tribe embraced the Florida State mascot. So, when there was talk about changing Florida State's mascot, they fought to keep the name. They succeeded, and Florida State is still called the Seminoles to this day. Native Americans don't find these teams' names offensive, especially the less stereotypical
