Patients are handed prescriptions daily in order to alleviate their symptoms. What the patient does with the prescription after it is filled and they leave the pharmacy counter is out of a pharmacist’s hands. Prescriptions are distributed with only the patient’s health in mind. However, in today’s society, prescriptions can become a black market especially for teenagers. The potential risks of misusing a prescription are dangerous and could become life threatening. Considering the availability of prescriptions, peer pressure, and a lack of information, precautions and preventative measures should be taken to provide a stronger defense against teenage overdoses. The availability of prescriptions provides teenagers one of the major necessities that could cause an overdose. One of the most common ways teenagers receive prescriptions are by doctor’s orders. Medications are intended are intended to speed up, slow down, or change something about the way a person’s body is working. When a situation begins to get tough teenagers try to change the way their bodies are working in order to cope. They turn to prescription drug abuse as their solution. According to an online article, “The real answer is to get the facts and not to take drugs in the first place” (The Truth About Prescription Drug Abuse). Later in life a teenager may find that they are addicted to prescription drugs. If this happens, they will be looking for a solution to put an end to their addiction. To avoid finding an answer to addiction later in life a teenager should solve the problem before it starts and not use the prescriptions at all.
