Say that only those who the Prime Minister prefers have the right to gain entry to our country. According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) there are over 4 million Syrians seeking refuge from the war that has torn apart their country. How many has Canada accepted? In this first few months of this year, only 308 UN-referred refugees came to Canada, in addition to 1513 privately sponsored refugees. Why so few, you may ask? Because the Conservatives believe that these vulnerable men, women and children are terrorists intent on destroying our country and everything it stands for. In 1979, during the Vietnamese exodus, there were many security concerns. First, the refugees could have been Communists in disguise, sent to infiltrate and destroy our government. Or, they could have been people with serious criminal backgrounds escaping justice in their home country. None of this was true. Thirty-five years ago, refugee sponsors had to wait just three or four months until their charges arrived. Today, the wait can be as long as four years due to bureaucratic red tape.
