Everyone, especially the media, tries to interpret why the shooter killed their victims, or why they felt the need to end others’ lives and their own. As a concerned citizen and college student, I recommend several policies to create a safer environment at school campuses. As there has been an increase in school shootings within the last ten years, the safety of students on campus has become a major concern. The problem of the increase in the number of school shootings has resulted in an unsafe environment for students affecting overall development. I am writing to seek your assistance on the issue of schools not having proper safety measures to prevent and respond to mass shootings, this issue must come to an end by finding an appropriate resolution. Students today live their day-to-day lives in constant fear of what seems inevitable. The United States has one of the highests rates of school shootings in the world. Society has become so desensitized to these shootings that they are no longer shocked to hear about another school falling victim to it. Indifference, the insensitivity, the carelessness, the alienation of human thoughts, actions, and words are willingly a danger to all.
Gun deaths are more and more prevalent, making students, parents, teachers, and staff worrisome of attending school on a daily basis. As the government is emphasizing the banning of books and TikTok, yet still not putting enough emphasis on the frightening amount of school shootings happening. This could include looking into gun laws or examining mental health's involvement. By putting regulations and finding the stimulus of the issue is a step in the right direction. Students, employees, and teachers/professors should not be apprehensive about going to school; school should be a place of learning and engaging with other students.
Many schools in today’s society suffer from shootings at some point while children are attending school. Shootings in schools are not a new occurrence, and America has dealt with multiple shootings in public schools in which the lives of many children and teachers have been undeservingly taken (Elliott 528). Because of school shootings, this leaves our children in danger with no way to protect themselves. Gun violence in schools is an evident problem, and there are several ways to reduce the number of incidents, such as mental health screening for owners of guns, interconnectedness of communities, and more school funding.
A nonprofit group that attempts to prevent gun violence called “Everytown for Gun Safety,” released a statement about school shootings. The organization claimed that the school shooting at “[Marjory Stoneman Douglas High] is the 18th school shooting in the U.S. in 2018.’” (Cox and Rich). In less than three months, there have been eighteen school shootings. This shows that schools are no longer a safe environment.
For thousands of shooting crimes happening in the U.S., many of them have the titles started with “elementary school” or “women”. Most recently, a six-year-old boy was injured and died during a shooting at a South Carolina elementary school, and the Sandy Hook Elementary school. These killings lead to the losing of lives and the sorrow for those families. Those primary students do not know how to use a gun, or they do not hold guns to school. So they cannot benefit from the self-defense function from guns, the only thing they get is the life threat
When one hears "school security" these days, the word that goes with it is "tighten." Indeed, given both external threats and unruly (sometimes violent) student behavior, it makes sense to think that the most sensible course of action is to err on the side of more stringent measures, harsher sanctions and less permissive administration. Guns have no role in our country schools. Schools and colleges are places of education. Students should be free to learn in an environment away from every day violence. The catastrophes that took place at Sandy Hook Elementary School, Columbine High School, and Virginia Tech. confirm the penetrating conclusion guns have in our nation’s schools. Violence on campus has Students, Parent, and University Staff all concerned and looking for preventative measures.
Since the Columbine High School shooting, school shootings have become a common occurrence. People have become so accustomed to seeing them on the news, so we hardly bat an eye at them anymore. For every instance of a school shooting we see, there are hundreds of lawmakers making public that their thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families. How many innocent children have to be brutally murdered before it is enough? This has been an uprising topic in today’s society since school shootings are so prevalent. From Kentucky, to Oregon, to Colorado, to Florida, the safety of our nation 's schools have been shattered by gunfire. The ones who have committed such horrible crimes have done these actions for many different reasons, at different times, and at different schools. Yet, they do have at least one thing in common.
