The first known shooting occurred in 1764. There are over 150 school shootings since then. A perfect example of children getting their hands on firearms occurred on January 23, 1884 in Sidney, Nebraska. While in school, a boy accidentally shot himself in the hand. He was playing with a pistol, which he shouldn’t have been able to get his hands on. He also had pointed the gun at one of his fellow classmates a few moments earlier. Luckily, this boy survived because the injury did not hit a fatal organ. But, people could have easily been killed under these circumstances. Another example of a mentally unstable person getting their hands on a firearm occurred on May 17, 1889 in Washington, D.C. Children should not have to fear going to school every day because of random lunatics that get their hands on guns they don’t deserve. Children not only have to fear adults, but they have to fear other children too. The age of the person doesn’t change the amount of danger of anyone who has a gun. Regardless of the age of the user, a death is completely possible. It is terrifying that no matter where you are, you have to fear all of the people around you. Not everyone is dangerous and will shoot you, but you won’t be able to tell the difference if someone has a gun or they don’t have a gun. Many people are afraid to ride subways because of fighting that leads to gun usage. Everyone that lives on this planet should have the right to go wherever they want and not have to fear getting shot. Guns are a very powerful weapon that should not be taken lightly.
