Imagine how delighted parents would feel if they reduced their back-to-school spending by hundreds upon hundreds of dollars as a result of not investing in designer clothes for their children to wear to school. Envision a student roaming down the congested hallway at school not having to fret about someone teasing them because of their outfit. Picture a school that is safe, content, and unified. With school uniforms, all of this is viable. First of all, uniforms save parents heaps of money. Secondly, uniforms can diminish the economic and social barriers between students. Lastly, uniforms can provide a happier, safer environment for everyone in the school. Uniforms are cost efficient and can save parents hundreds of dollars. In 2012, families with school-age children spent an average of $688.82 on apparel and shoes back-to-school shopping. The following year, it was projected that back-to-school shopping for elementary, middle, and high school students combined would reach almost twenty-seven billion dollars, with the average family investing $634.78 (Allen). In a 2013 study conducted by the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP), seventy-seven percent of school leaders with a formal dress code or uniform policy in place estimated the average cost of their school uniforms per child, per year, to be $150 or less, meaning that with uniforms the average family could potentially save upwards of three-hundred dollars.
