“Life is to be lived, not controlled, and humanity is won by continuing to play in face of certain defeat” Ralph Ellison (Ellison). An industry called human trafficking thrives by trading humans for the purpose of sexual slavery, forced labor or commercial sexual exploitation. The most common form of this wicked industry is sex trafficking. There are people in this world who target young men and women, rob them of their innocence, and force them into slavery. “Society may call it prostitution but federal law calls it sex trafficking” (“What is Sex Trafficking”). We are people, we are women, and we want to be treated with respect, dignity, and we want rights like the rest of you enjoy.” (“New Slavery” 117) Chan was trafficked, raped, beaten, and forced to accept men. She was humiliated so that men could take her and get their pleasure from her. While she brought profit to many, and pleasure to others, all she brought to herself was shame, pain and humiliation. Like Dina Chan, high school student Shauna was befriended by a girl at her high school. They started doing things together, and Shauna even became comfortable with her new friend’s dad. However, Shauna was in for a surprise. As it turns out, her new friend and her father were actually sex traffickers. In fact, she was not even a teenager, she was a grown woman. “She was his partner in crime. Her job was to “recruit” young girls at the local high school” (Winckelmann 29). Our society needs to come together as a whole and put an end to this type of slavery once and for all. It is not fair to young men and women to live in captivity and be sold to strangers to perform random acts of sex.. By ending slavery once and for all, our world would truly know
