'Don't text while driving' has emerged as a popular slogan to keep people off their cellphones while driving. Not only is it commonly known not to use a hand-held devices while driving, in some states, it's illegal. It is common sense to not use hand-held devices while driving because they provide a distraction, multitasking is a myth, and it's illegal. Using hand held devices while driving provides distraction to the driver, increasing their risk of getting into a car accident. Texting while driving requires one to take their eyes off the road. If one were to be going 60 miles per hour (mph) and looked down at their phone for 1 second, they would have traveled 15 yards by the time they look back up at the road. Furthermore, they are statistically more likely to crash their car when talking on a cellphone. Haven't there been enough heart breaking stories about someone losing a friend or relative in a car crash because some imbecile was using their hand-held device while driving? Can the world really take more of that? It would be so much easier to keep one's conscious guilt free by turning off their hand-held device before driving. One could say they know how to multitask, however, it's been scientifically proven that there's no such thing as multitasking. What society refers to as multitasking is actually just quickly shifting one's attention between two or more objects. For example, on the popular show Brain Games, they had a self proclaimed multitasker drive using a driving simulator while answering basic math questions and remembering a sequence of words. The 'multitasker' had trouble answering the basic addition problems, and could only remember two of the three sequences of words. Furthermore, he also drove off the road at one point and nearly crashed into a tree, thus proving that multitasking doesn't exist, and concentrating on the road while talking or answering questions really doesn't work.
