Some people believe that prohibiting the use of phones while driving also prohibits their freedom of speech and their right to privacy. They feel that they should be permitted to do what they want with their own belongings while in their own car without the government getting involved. This, however, is not allowing the government to do the very difficult job of protecting the good of the community. If a person feels that their privacy is what is most important, then they would definitely not want to be involved in a texting and driving accident. In many cases, when a person is texting and driving, and there is a crash, their phone will be confiscated by the court. Her freedom to text her boyfriend from what she thought was the privacy of her own car, are both now worthless since she lost her life. To add on, updating your status on facebook is an also an example of exercising your freedom of speech. Those in favor of banning the use of phones while driving do not wish to take away this freedom of speech. In the words of the AT&T campaign, it is something that simply “can wait”. Tragically, not everyone hears this message loud and clear. Thirty two year old Courtney Sanford was excited when her favorite song “Happy” came on the radio (Withnall). She decided to voice her opinion about it on Facebook with a status update about how happy the song “Happy” made her (Withnall). That status update, that exercise of free speech, was her last time letting her voice be heard. If only Courtney had waited, she would be able to have new favorite songs and tell new people about it- from the safety of solid ground without a steering wheel in her hands. While this ban would infringe upon the privacy of a person’s choices within their car, that right to privacy and that right to speak are not nearly as important as the right to life; therefore, the person behind the wheel should be only that- a person behind a wheel and not a person on their
