Texting and driving has been a major concern for drivers and pedestrians. Although there may be laws that illegalize driving while on the phone, people still give into their nasty habits intentionally, and without the idea of a casualty occurring. The National Safety Council has worked with people who have lost family members and friends due to crashes that involved in driver cell phone use. It has been scientifically, and due to the rate of casualty count, driving while texting is worse than driving while intoxicated or high on marijuana. Drivers in their 20s are 24 percent of drivers in all fatal crashes, but are 27 percent of the distracted drivers and 33 percent of the distracted drivers that were using cell phones in fatal crashes.As of December 2015, 156.7 billion text messages were sent in the US (including Puerto Rico, the Territories, and Guam) every month while driving. Distracted driving is a dangerous epidemic on America’s roadways. In 2015, there were 3,477 people killed and an estimated additional 391,000 injured in motor vehicle crashes involving distracted drivers. It would work like this: An officer arriving at the scene of an accident could ask for the phones of any drivers involved, and use the Textalyzer to tap into the operating system to check for recent cell phone activity. The technology could determine whether a driver had used the phone to text, email or do anything else that is forbidden under New York’s driving laws, which prohibit drivers from holding phones to their ear.
