The State of Florida is not doing enough to prevent distracted driving. Florida is the 41st state to eliminate texting while driving, but unfortunately it is only a secondary offense. Making it only a secondary offense doesn't do much to prevent people from hopping on their phones and driving, its only a $30 fine. The law also states the driver must be caught doing something illegal before stopped for just the phone use. With less strict laws on texting and driving people will be more vulnerable to do it.
Every year in the U.S., at least 400,000 people are killed to texting while driving, with Florida being the second most dangerous state for driving. Furthermore, inexperience is a big disadvantage that impacts most teenagers, other distractions and factors increase the safety risk for teen drivers such as using the cell phone while driving. “An Insurance Institute for Highway Safety study found that cell phone users were four times more likely to get into car crashes serious enough to injure themselves”. Sadly though, many people don’t take these laws into consideration and continuously make the mistake of using the phone while operating a motored vehicle. This means that for the police to pull you over while using the phone while driving would be if the driver must also have committed another traffic citation before they can get introuble for texting while driving. This is bizarre to me because Florida is one of only five states where texting while driving is not a primary offense. Basically, drivers cannot be stopped solely for texting and driving because in Florida it is only accounted as a secondary offense not a primary. I feel that the state of Florida does not do enough to prevent distracted drivers and a change needs to come
