The state of Florida does not do what is necessary to prevent distracted driving, just putting laws in place won't solve the problem. Florida needs to realize that driving accidents due to distraction happen daily, hourly even, and just putting up “Safe Phone Zones” and making texting/calling while driving illegal is not what this issue calls for. The legislation in the state of Florida is not able to keep pace with all the distractions drivers deal with. With such developments coming to a head, these regulations that currently exist are falling short. The state needs to take strides in the right direction of educating rather than enforcing. When a person is educated on an issue, they are more likely to listen to reason. For some, when something is just a law or legislation an individual, namely a younger person or teen, will take this as an opportunity to rebel. Without proper education people can make uninformed or dangerous decisions which puts not just themselves but others in danger as well. According to the Florida Department of Transportation there is more than one form of distracted driving, "There are three types of distraction: manual, which is taking hands off the wheel; visual, or taking eyes off the road; and cognitive, which involves taking one’s mind off driving." All of these types of distraction from eating to talking to your friend in the passenger seat can pose a threat to the person driving and the people around them. Florida needs to create a program to help inform drivers, specifically teenage drivers, on the dangers of unfocused driving and what causes it. A great way to implement this would be a simple course added to high schools Drivers Ed
